How To Utilize Tibetan Prayer Beads. What Are Malas
Mala is Sanskrit for the original Sanskrit name of the prayer beads that are used to count mantras. All Tibetan Buddhist communities have many malas. They can be hung around wrists, or suspended from fingers. They are known as trengwa in Tibetan. As a fundamental element of Tibetan Buddhist practice is repeating (mentally or in loud voice) certain mantras thousands, or many times, it is beneficial to use the rosary to count the number of times you pray, as a kind of spiritual abacus. Even if you are not doing any actual counting, the repetitive repetition of the mantra as you are proceeding bead by bead through the mala helps be a focus for the mind and help it to relax. The string is composed of 108 beads which is made of precious, semi-precious, and/or seed stones, wood or seeds, is the most popular type of mala. You're counted as having completed 100 mantra recitations every time you move around the mala. The additional 8 beads are designed to be "spare" to be used in the event you do make mistakes or miss count on the way. The head beads are larger than the other beads and is sometimes referred to as a guru bead. However, it is vital to the circuit's start point and not included in the total of 108 beads. Malas might have precious stones that are placed at various intervals. For example, coral or turquoise. These stones may be added in intervals you are able to count, like following 27 beads. This lets you know that you're just 1/4 of the circuit. These counter beads are extra and your total count is 111 instead of 108. There's also a smaller, wrist-sized mala made of 27 beads, for instance and is used to perform prostrations. The smaller size is wrapped around your hand and repeated four times. There are other configurations that can be created for example, such as 21 or 22, but that's not a problem as long your mala is able to count.
Types of Malas
There are a variety of malas. Some are made from bone or ivory, and others are made of lapis-lazuli or sandalwood. While there are many theories on which type of mala is the best for different types of prayers however, we don't think it matters that much. We believe that the majority of other Tibetans don't make big distinctions in the mala types, either. Monks and nuns generally prefer simple, cheap malas, such as wooden malas. You can use any kind of mala. It is important to be focused on the spiritual aspect of the practice, like praying and reciting mantras, more than the beauty or worth of your mala. Have a look at the top Tibetan Bodhiseed for more.
How Do You Hold And Count With Your Malas
We'd like to make it clear that, in the way Tibetan tradition is widely known as, there aren't rigid rules for malas or the way of counting your mantras. Every person is different. There are a few ways you could do it, but not nearly as important as what you intend to ask for. If you're meditating with your heart and using your mala for prayer it, then you're doing the right things! Some sources recommend holding the mala with the left hand. However, certain Tibetans use it with their right hand. If you are holding a prayer rod with one hand, while holding your mala and mala in the other hand, it's more comfortable to carry the mala using the left hand , while your prayer rod is held in the right. Begin with the one closest to the "guru" using your mala the way you normally would. Place the mala in your thumb (or the index finger) and keep it there. Repeat the mantra silently or loudly. Then move on to the next one using a the rolling motion of your thumb. repeating your mantra over and over again, then repeat. Once you are at the next guru bead you are done with 100 mantras. Most Tibetans do not leave the guru's bead at this moment. Instead, they reverse the direction and turn the mala around to begin a fresh circuit with 100 mantras, before returning to the original route. Because we do not know the reason this happens, we practice it as a routine, rather than any special reason.
Caring for your Mala
If you use your mala to perform mantra recitations, take it to teachings or even have it blessed with your Guru, it will acquire spiritual significance. While it's not in and of itself as holy as the statue or piece of Buddhist scripture, it is something we usually treat with respect. It is therefore not recommended to put it on the flooring, pile mundane objects on it or throw it away. Tibetans put their malas around their wrists and necks when they are not in use. They're not designed to be worn as necklaces or to show self-deprecation, instead, they are a means of showing faith. You can hang it high up in front of the altar if you aren't using it for long periods of time or when you're sleeping. It's actually stored on a specific shelf beneath the altar. It's up to you to care for it, and keep your eyes open.
